Medicare is a federal health insurance plan that came into effect in 1965 with the purpose of providing health insurance to U.S. citizens over the age of 65, regardless of income or medical history. Original Medicare consists of Part A (inpatient hospital services) and Part B (outpatient medical services). Prescription drug coverage may be purchased separately under Part D Medicare, and special plans covering Original Medicare, Part D Medicare and more health services, also known as Medicare Part C (Medicare Advantage plans), can be purchased from private insurance companies.
There are specific times when you can sign up for Medicare Advantage (Part C) and Medicare prescription drug coverage (Part D), or make changes to coverage you already have.
Medicare Supplements
Medicare Supplement Plans (also referred to as Medigap) are insurance policies designed to provide coverage for some of the costs that original Medicare doesn’t cover. These can include deductibles and co-payments. With a Medicare Supplement plan, you can see any provider that accepts Medicare, no referrals are needed! To be eligible, you must have both Medicare Part A and Part B. The supplement plan pays after Medicare approves and processes the claim.
